An Actor’s Journey Beyond the Obvious

Greetings actors!

Have you ever pondered the complexity behind a seemingly simple shape like a square? It's fascinating how a few lines can form the basis of so many mathematical concepts, but what if I told you that drawing a perfect square is akin to mastering the art of acting? Much like the deceptive simplicity of a free-hand drawn square, the world of acting is multifaceted, demanding more than what meets the eye.

In the realm of acting, the surface may appear smooth, but beneath it lies a multitude of layers waiting to be explored. Just as a square drawn free-hand might lack equal sides or right angles, a performance without depth, emotion, or technique fails to capture the essence of a character. It's easy to assume we understand a square, just as it's easy to assume we comprehend acting. However, true mastery comes from delving into the intricacies that lie beneath the surface.

When I stand before a group of actors and draw a squarish shape, I am reminded of the importance of observation and perception in our craft. As actors, we must observe not just the characters we portray, but also the world around us. We need to perceive emotions, motivations, and nuances with a keen eye, understanding that the subtlest details can transform an ordinary performance into an extraordinary one. Just as a free-hand square might not be perfect, our performances don't need to be flawless either. Embracing imperfections is not a sign of weakness but a testament to our authenticity. In the pursuit of portraying genuine, relatable characters, it's these imperfections that make our performances believable and human. Every crack and crevice adds depth, allowing the audience to connect with the rawness of our emotions.

The journey to becoming a skilled actor is paved with 'not-so-square' moments – auditions that don't go as planned, roles that challenge our comfort zones, and characters that push our boundaries. These experiences, much like the imperfectly drawn squares, teach us valuable lessons. They mold us, refine our skills, and propel us toward growth. Embracing these challenges is fundamental to evolving as an actor. So, when is a square not a square? It ceases to be just a square when we recognize its nuances, its imperfections, and its hidden complexities. Similarly, as actors, our journey transcends the obvious. It's about exploring the layers of human emotions, embracing the imperfect, and learning from every experience, no matter how unconventional.

As you embark on your acting journey, remember that the depth of your performances lies in your ability to see beyond the surface, to understand the unseen dimensions of your characters, and to embrace the not-so-square moments with grace and resilience. Here's to embracing the complexity, celebrating the imperfections, and discovering the profound beauty in the art of acting – a journey that goes far beyond the boundaries of a simple square.

So, if you've ever felt like a misshapen square in a world of perfection, remember this: at Totally Lit Actors Workshop, we see the beauty in your uniqueness.
